If you’re looking for a career that is exciting and adventurous, then becoming a tow truck driver or operator may be the perfect choice for you. There is never a dull moment when you’re responsible for rescuing vehicles from precarious positions and getting them back on the road. If you’re interested in entering this field, there are a few things you need to know.
Here at Combined Towing, we are always looking for enthusiastic new drivers to join our team, even those with no experience in the tow truck industry – so don’t be disheartened if you are new to the industry! We can accommodate any applicants that have the right mindset and a willingness to learn. On a salary of up to $109,999 and the flexibility of keeping a truck so you can start and finish from home, this career path might just be the refreshing change you need.
What Do I Have to Do to Become an MR Driver?
Here at Combined Towing, we provide an in-house training program for anyone interested in pursuing a career in tow truck driving, as long as an applicant:
• Has an MR (medium rigid) Truck License
• Can drive a manual gearbox
• Has a New South Wales Tow Truck Drivers Certificate
The Tow Truck Drivers Certificate is a requirement to drive a tow truck in NSW, which involves a driving test to ensure the drivers have a comprehensive understanding of how to drive a tow truck.
The Certificate is issued by the NSW Department of Fair Trading and involves a background check into an applicant’s driving record and criminal history. They take, on average, 4-6 weeks to be processed, so ensure you take this period into account when enquiring about truck driving positions that are vacant.
Additionally, it is important to note that preference is often given to applicants with tilt tray tow truck experience, however, at Combined Towing, we are willing to train applicants if they have the willingness to learn and have references to support their work ethic.
Is There Any Other Driver Training I Should Undertake?
It’s so much more than just towing. We are in such a unique situation where our customers are stressed out from motor vehicle accidents or breakdowns, therefore, in our training video, we discuss the importance of caring and communicating with our customers.
Customer service is our number one priority, and so it is important to us to make our customers, and anyone involved in an accident, feel better and do what we can to support them during this time.
During this training period, we also have an intensive Driving Induction and Training program which includes:
• Driver Training video
• Induction manual
• 1 Week of Mandatory Inboard Training with our Driving Instructor before a new driver is allowed in a truck on their own, to make sure they Comply with all Tow Truck Authorities and Combined Towing Procedures
• All employees are required to sign off on the company customer service policy, our code of conduct, and our code of ethics.
What Does The Driver Training Video Entail?
At Combined Towing, we believe you should always prioritise competence and safety for yourself and everyone around you. Therefore, before we let any drivers drive our tow trucks, we ensure they watch our self-created tow truck driver training video, which is a great way to understand the basics of towing.
The Driver Training video will specifically advise you on the importance of a healthy attitude toward safety for yourself and others. This includes educating our trainees on:
• The correct safety clothing
• The dangers of drinking the night before (your blood alcohol level can keep rising even after drinking)
• The dangers of drug driving
• Checking the truck for maintenance (no matter if the truck belongs to us or you)
Once this is completed, we will discuss how to correctly load cars, motorbikes, and machinery on a tow truck with the correct capacity and points of security for any load on the truck.
It is a highly educational video that can be finished in under an hour, and we recommend it to anyone getting involved in the tow truck business to learn the basics!
